He wasn't really a director with a recognisable style or visual distinction though, was he? He was a man who could orchestrate a reasonably-mounted film with a solid, polished veneer of watchable interest, but with no real 'trademark' style. Cynical though it may sound, Hamilton's most high-profile work came with the Bond films, and if he didn't have that, then it would've been difficult to think of any other major achievement he'd had.
That said, I'd seen his version of An Inspector Calls starring Alistair Sim last year on the telly, and it came off as a very respectable and bizarre version of a British Twilight Zone episode - and very enjoyable, too.
