Well 'Duh', Avon shot him in the final episode.

I rewatched Blake's 7 about a year ago, while bed-ridden with a dose of the flu.

It's refreshingly cynical stuff, compared to the generally optimistic sci-fi that came out of the US. And the whole Blake-Avon dynamic is terrific.

It went downhill when Thomas left at the end of series two, leaving Avon running the show for series three, and series four was rubbish (with the notable exception of the very final episode, where he famously reappeared).

Avon is one of the greatest TV characters ever portrayed. I'm not so sure about Blake.

I don't think he was ever particularly happy about Blake being his most renowned role. I suppose it didn't help that Paul Darrow got most of the best lines. Still, he never played the role with anything less then 100% conviction. He was at his best in the very first episode, which played out more like a dystopian political thriller; and of course, the very last.

Let's not forget, Blakes's 7 did all the things that modern-day box-set type series are famous for - 13-episode seasons held together by story arcs, protagonists who didn't always get on, 'season finales', and sudden deaths of regular characters. It was massively ahead of the game.

As mentioned by Stumpy, the real strength was in the dynamic.

Of the original seven, only four of the actors still alive.

                Keating, Darrow, Knyvette, Chappell.

                  Technically, it's Blake's three-and-three-quarters.

Many years ago I worked a production of MacBeth starring Paul Darrow and Jack Smethurst!
