Where did all the humans come from in 'Star Wars'?

It's a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away and there are humans (and cross breeds) speaking English. Where did they come from? Were they early man who evolved quickly and got off the planet? If so, they can't have been that long ago as the English is pretty much the same as ours. Unless, as they were evolving quicker, they developed English quicker.

Either that or they were early humans snatched by aliens who gave them a crash course in language, technology etc. If that is the case, though, did they come back to earth and teach us English, how to make robots etc how come they us how to make light sabers and landspeeders and whatnot.

There is no suggestion that it is a parallel universe or anything so we have to have to assume that, somewhere along the line, humans left earth to go to a galaxy far far away and, perhaps, they have come back.

On a similar theme, the only text you see written in the films is on a screen in an Empire ship in ROTJ - its written in hieroglyphics.
Also, in TESB, Han Solo says "I'll see you in hell" to a rebel troop, so there is a concept of heaven and hell in their universe.

Lads, I'm not sure these are the things that are most unbelievable about the films, you know?

Not talking about a film, but I think that MST3K answered questions like these best:

Man, I didn't realise that Wales was such a cultural backward in the late 70s.

Looks like Bored only got the dubbed version.

Hold on, you have paid attention to mine and Harry's post and you didn't realise that Wales in the 70s was a backwater?

Anyway, you are right, I didn't realise that the whole of Wales has "ignore culture" button.

This, among other reasons, is why I think The Empire Strikes Back should never have received the Academy award for Best Documentary Feature.

I hate to be all serious and everything about something so stupid, but they're not speaking English, they're speaking Basic.

They came mostly from southern California.

One of the things I really, really, hate about sci-fi, is where some geek somewhere not only goes overboard and invents a new "alphabet" that is actually just a new set of symbols for all the English ones, but then goes out of their way to ensure that none of the symbols look like any of "ours". The first part is downright lazy, the second part is just stupidly improbable - why would any set of symbols apparently based on geometric shapes including squares and triangles exclude ones that looked like I, X, V, O, D, C, E, N, < or > ?

Well, if they came from here a long long time ago, it may have been while language was reasonably well advanced but writing hadn't been. Therefore, the spoken language is the same and the alphabet different.

Sorry but I am just interested in how languages evolve.

Looking at GY's links, it appears that the humans first appeared on Coruscant, as far this galaxy is concerned. They have obviously got their theories wrong as they think that humans evolved from Zhells but that can't have happened unless they then populated Earth...hold on, there's a theory there.

If you were sitting down with a decent grasp of spoken (but no ideas of written) English, and wanting to invent a written version of it based on phonetics, you'd begin with at least twelve distinct vowel symbols, not just five. And (as, to be fair, the author of the one above has recognised) you'd borrow the trick from cyrillic of having distinct letters for "sh", "ch", "th", etc, which should quickly lead you to an alphabet of about 50 characters. The only reason we struggle along with ours is that we learn that "learn" is pronounced differently from "bear", or indeed "ear", but it makes absolutely no sense. You wouldn't invent a system like that.

what I want to know is where did they get all of those camp english homosexuals to fill out the officer class of the empire? I'm surprised that it wasn't a Death Arch rather than a death star.

It's obviously a parallel reality to ours. We can see, for instance, that the vacuum of space there must after all be full of the kind of "ether" long since debunked in our universe, or some similar medium. Otherwise how can the space battles be so noisy? The clincher is that chase through an asteroid belt in Attack of the Clones where Jango Fett deploys sonic charges. It's also been pointed out to me before now that in Revenge of the Sith the shields are knocked out on a hangar bay in a starship, leaving it open to the void, yet apparently retaining a breathable atmosphere. Clearly George Lucas wouldn't have made all these choices by an improbable series of clueless cock-ups, would he now?

                                  Oh.

Artistic licence, to answer the original question. (See also Romeo and Juliet speaking English, 1960s-looking persons in Cleopatra, and a man playing Widow Twankey).
