It seems like HBO never knew how to schedule it. The first season came on right after season 5 of the Sopranos, which was one of the darkest seasons in that show. While in previous years, Curb Your Enthusiasm came on after the Sopranos which was the perfect dessert to the main course. The effect was like having two main courses.

Then in subsequent years they'd put it on in the middle of summer, and they'd use the same ad campaign that worked for Sex&TheCity-Sopranos-Wire-Curb, where they focused on the characters. The characters in Deadwood simply are too ugly,smelly,rat-infested,rotten,vile, and disgusting to be sold. The stories and plots with those characters, however...

How many seasons were there? I saw two. They showed up on the History Channel here a couple of years after they were on HBO but that was it.

There was 3, but no one saw it.

I think the other major defect of the show is that the show was sold around the good guy, but (A)he was the weakest and most wooden on the cast, and (B) he was no McNulty.

only seen first 3 episodes of season one, but its bloody good

is that really that lovejoy bloke? He is excellent

my only doubt on authenticity are the prices. when wa it set 1876? 50 cent whiskey, 20 dollars to rent a spot for a shop for a week

                1976 maybe

The prices are probably right, at least if the Klondike rush is anything to go by. There were huge mark-ups in frontier boom towns, usually the only people who made serious money were the traders.
