The Clash: New Years Day 1977 (BBC4/Julien Temple)

This was screened last night on BBC4 and is on the iPlayer.

A new documentary film from Julien Temple showing unseen clips from the punk era and footage of the Clash's gig at the Roxy.

It's one of the best assemblages I've seen, most of the contributors are articulate and interesting, with none of the usual talking heads.

We hear from McLaren and Strummer. Oh, and from me (talking about how seedy and scary Covent Garden was at the time).

I've recorded it. When do I need to fast-forward?

Haha, my bits are very short and it's just my voice as far as I'm aware.

The Covent Garden thing goes on for ever, which is fine if you're remotely interested in the history of it.
Same with the looped film about some eejits cavorting around the fountain in Trafalgar Sq. It just felt really padded out.
The Clash were pretty bad, understandably so in their early days and while it's not the point at all, you could really hear the improvement Topper Headon brought to the band, well, that and Paul learning to tune his bass.

I enjoyed Temple's Oil City Confidential a lot more.

There's got to be some public screening of this?

Promise not to get too jealous of you for being there or thereabouts, MsD.

              :-) It's on the iPlayer ..

Julien Temple's other (better?) films, London: the Modern Babylon and Oil City Confidential had limited theatrical release, I don't know what the deal is with this.

Like Phil Strongman's McLaren film, (which about 20 people turned up to at the last screening) it's probably very interesting for a very few people, and others might want to skim it.

I wasn't at the Clash NYD gig, btw.

                    Only saw it last night.

Some really charming elements, alongside the post-punk star-spotting: real throwback to see people embarrassedly watching themselves on screen; the view from Mick Jones' balcony; just how young and excited they seemed.

                      How very kind.

It was part of a conversation from years ago, not actually intended for broadcast at the time, but it's OK.

                      At least it's "authentic".

As authentic as a cocknee costermonger flogging some caulis.

Am I right in thinking some of the old Cov Garden market footage was from Lindsay Anderson's short film..?

You were there even if you weren't, in my small town youth's eyes.
