    Northern Soul

Great music, of course, and a realistic recreation of the 1970s; from all I've heard, the film captures 1970s northern England accurately.

I couldn't connect with the characters though. I didn't think they were well developed at all. It's written like a biopic, with a plot driven by more or less disconnected episodes rather than a cohesive narrative. Which is a pity, because I thought the acting was pretty good. Even if the lead character looks closer to 30 than to being a teenager.

Anyway, the song that plays over the opening sequence, which was a bit of a hit in the mid-70s and is not a Northern Soul song: anyone know what it is?

    Brand New Key by Melanie.

Saw this tonight, a one off screening which was followed by a Q&A with the guy that played John, but didn't stay for that bit.

Enjoyed the film, I only had vague knowledge of this growing up - I remember in what would have been the early 80s market stalls and record shops were still selling Northern Soul badges and patches, though I'm guessing it would have all but died out by then.

What is probably more notable is the ground level support for the film, it had a limited release but soul fans have arranged screenings themselves or petitioned local cinemas to show it. The screening I was at was part of a weekend of film event, with DJs playing beforehand.

The film has been talked about and eagerly anticipated for so long within the ranks of soul fans that I think that everyone was desperate to see it on the big screen. I must say that I thought it was great-miles better than I feared...I thought that the two leads were absolutely top notch and look like they have good careers ahead of them.

I can't wait to see this - it's not showing near us, unfortunately, so we'll have to get the DVD. I missed the Northern Soul scene by about three years - by the time I was old enough to go to Wigan, I'd got into other music. Absolutely love the music now.

Mrs. Thrillseeker and I took Northern Soul dancing classes on one of our monthly dates recently. We're trying to find space in the house to practice with the instructor's DVD.

The scene did exist outside Wigan before, during and after the Casino's closure and has never stopped since,though...
