    Justified

Yes, the minor characters were almost always fantastic. In season 6 alone there were Boon (surely the most love-to-hate character of them all), Ty Walker, Uncle Zacharia and Choo-Choo, and the brief return of Ellstin Limehouse was very welcome.

There were few of these sidekicks I didn't take to in the run of the series, such as Patton Oswald's cop.

Perhaps my favourite was Wynn Duffy. He was to Justified as Saul Goodman was to Breaking Bad.

Did anyone notice that the white-bearded realtor had the same surname as Keith Schreier, the writer of some of the episodes?

No, but he — the actor — is a TV vet. The last extended role I saw him in was as the head of the team booster club in Friday Night Lights.

Might be tough as, their individual stars are on the rise (Olyphant's in Oliver Stone's bio-pic of Edward Snowden, and Goggins in Tarantino's upcoming flick,) but I hope the two leads get a chance to work together again. Perhaps it helps that they're friends but, whatever the reason, their on-screen chemistry is wonderful.

        Justified

I watched the last episode of Justified last night, and thought it was a very poignant closure.

I thought Season 6 was particularly good, some cracking new characters as mentioned, and some very black humour in the unfortunate endings that found some of them.

The little nod to Elmore Leonard was a nice touch, as Raylan packed away his office, handing a book to Tim Gutterson.

I would imagine Justified has done wonders for sales of Kentucky bourbon, anyone up for a Justified drinking game? Could get very messy, very quickly.

The book was actually George Higgins's The Friends of Eddie Coyle, which, I'm guessing, had particular meaning for Leonard. The show did conclude with a very nice credit to him though

Interestingly, I recently finished The Hot Kid. Which, in many ways, is like a preliminary sketch for Justified.

            Justified

Sundance has a new series called Hap and Leonard which I guess is aimed at fans of Justified. It's based on the southern noir novels of Joe R Lansdale, a couple of which I read a while back and enjoyed.
The title characters are played by Michael K. Williams, who of course was Omar in The Wire, and James Purefoy who I have a lot of time for due to his scenery-chewing turn as Mark Anthony in Rome. The third lead is Christina Hendricks who was Joan in Mad Men, giving a kind of empowered Daisy Duke performance .
I've only seen the first episode, which i liked and made me want to watch more. It's a bit light and caperish, but has decent performances, as you'd expect. You'll have seen the set up lots of times before, with none-too-bright villains seeking the abandoned stash from a decades-old heist, but really it's meant to be enjoyed for its characters and Deep South ambience.

Anyone watch Justified: City Primeval? Caught up and finished it recently. Started out kind of weak for me but picked up as it went along. Still, it didn't have the magic of the original series for me. I liked some of the bigger questions about policing and the big city corruption it introduced...maybe it's my fault for expecting it to be too much like the original, but the tone change was just a little too much of a shift for me.

HOWEVER...it's worth it for the finale. That's all I'll say.

I started it but lost interest.

This thread reminded me to check up on the KLF again. Just in time - they announced a 2323 World Tour.

We loved the original series but thought Primeval had absolutely none of the charm. We also couldn't figure out the point of locating the show in Detroit since so little of the city is 'present' in the series. But big yes to the finale.

It's based on a different Elmore Leonard story. He's from Detroit.

Sure. But it literally could have been shot in Cleveland, OH or Hamilton, ON. There was no Detroityness to it.

Those places are similar to Detroit. I’m not sure what would make it more Detroity.

Yeah, I'll admit to not having much that I can think of when it comes to a Detroit look or specific landmarks of the city. All I can think of is the Joe Louis fist statue, and the abandoned houses/urban decay porn that you see sometimes.

Also, it's not like the original series was perfect when it came to depicting the look of Harlan County. Interesting how a lot of the exterior nature shots resemble canyons in Southern California...

Is it available legally in the UK yet?

The scene where after a scuffle in Duffys mobile home Raylan drops a bullet onto the henchman’s chest saying “the next ones coming faster” is still my favourite tv cop show moment ever.

I’m sure they could’ve set a scene in the Motown museum/studio and had a bit of fun with a few Grosse Point Blank references. As a long time Elmore obsessive I’ll be distraught if “the Frank Murphy Halls of Justice” don’t feature.

It was on FX/Hulu in the US, and IIRC Hulu shows are on Disney+ over there (which still seems strange to me).

Thanks for the reminder of that moment. Sadly this season didn't have a comedic but threatening presence like Wynn Duffy.

I have to say, the 'pain in the ass teenage daughter' is a trope that's already worn out its welcome. But Olyphant's real-life 'pain in the ass teenage daughter' character was more grating than usual.

The new series was entertaining enough, and it had a couple of compelling characters, especially the bar owner.

But the original was all about characters, from Boyd Crowder at the centre to the peripheral characters, like Ellstin Limehouse or, of course, Wynn Duffy. So many memorable characters. I don't think I'll remember many from this series. I can't even remember their names, just a few days after watching it.

And, yeah, things got better once annoying daughter got sent home to Miami.
