    The Late Late Mike Smith

Has passed on at the age of 59. One of the sounds of my yoof.

    The Late Late Mike Smith

Smash Hits published my "Ode to Mike Smith" on the Black Type letters page. I cannot remember what it said, but might have referred to his inane grin, and I think it ended with the lone "You are a clot".

I don't know what prompted it, or whether it was playful or hateful about Smith. I suspect the it was the former, since I didn't mind him.

I found him annoying, but too anodyne to be wholly dislikable. That said, I didn't expect him to go before his time. A bit of an unwelcome surprise, all told.

Agree - it's telling that most of the tributes from former colleagues talk about his "professionalism", rather than his personality.

Sad to see him go early though - I was also mildly surprised that his showbiz marriage to Sarah Greene was still going strong away from the limelight. And that he'd kept up with the helicopter stuff after the crash.

          Hmmm.

Shortly after leaving Radio 1 in 1988, he and Greene were seriously injured when their helicopter crashed in Gloucestershire…

…"After the accident, I realised that television is not the greatest thing in the world."
But it didn't occur to him after after this accident two years earlier -

I am sure he fronted some Aids awareness programmes in the early 80's (or was that Nicky Campbell?).

I like the idea of a Nicky Campbell Awareness campaign.
