Good second world war films
Das Boot
A Bridge Too Far and The Longest Day are ensemble-star films but worth a look
Catch-22 will warp your brain a bit
For a lighter relief try Kelly's Heroes.
EDIT: didn't read "foreign" WWII films... Another good one was Stalingrad http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108211/

I second Army of Shadows, outstanding film.
And on France, if you have four and a half hours to spare, the documentary The Sorrow And The Pity is essential. Written and directed by Marcel Ophuls, its 1969 release was banned in France for a number of years due to the uncomfortable truths it raised about the actual nature and number of the resistance and collaboration.
Oorlogswinter (Winter In Wartime) is a pretty good enactment of the 1944 hongerwinter in the Netherlands.

This is one you only want to watch when you're feeling particularly psychologically robust, though. Some years ago it was the film I started the 'Horrors of war' films thread about. Seriously - approach with caution.

Oooh, set in Clermont-Ferrand, a city I know well having in lived in the Cantal for a year. I think I'll have to have a gander.

I rather liked:
Closely Observed Trains
(I don't know why they've changed the "original" translated title)

I haven't seen it myself, but it was recommended to me by a guy I used to work with, who was a bit of a WW2 nut. He did warn me that it wasn't for the queasy or easily shocked.

From wiki:
'The film is a graphic depiction of the war atrocities committed by the Japanese at Unit 731, the secret biological weapons experimentation unit of the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. The film details the various cruel medical experiments Unit 731 inflicted upon the Chinese and Soviet prisoners towards the end of the war.'
