    Gordon Willis

I thought the passing of Gordon Willis would be worth mentioning. He was cinematographer on some of the great films of the 1970s, but perhaps his finest achievement was Woody Allen's Zelig.

I'd plump for the Godfather films. It's a choice filled with ridiculous obviousness, but it's the kind of work where you could turn off the sound and luxuriate in the composition and lighting of the images. Coppola, on his commentaries, noted Willis's unflinching insistence on having a solid, unshowy style that didn't rely on over-elaboration or flashy movement. He'd baulk at energised, over-fluid camerawork, and produce work that would be more akin to a painting than some Spielberguesque visual bravado (if the fates had conspired to throw Willis and a director like Edgar Wright, for example, the former wouldn't reach the first tea-break before trying to strangle the latter).

    A loss of an artist.
