    So, BBC Three

Is being axed. Top brass apparently met yesterday.

Any thoughts? It's best known for its dumber programming but it turned some well-regarded shows - Being Human, Little Britain, Gavin and Stacey, Uncle, Ideal.

Whatever you think about the brand, cutting BBC Three's £100m-odd programming budget has a big impact on the money the Beeb has to spend on developing new comedy and drama. And failing to invest in the young audience is potentially increasing the risk to the Corporation's long-term future.

RIP BBC3 - can't say I'll weep buckets at its demise. But, the point about maintaining an investment in the younger demographic is a good one. (Perhaps not feeding them a diet of obesity, underage pregnancies and Ibiza-type debauchery is also a good one.)

More importantly, what happens to BBC4? A re-brand?

If they got rid of BBC3 and gave its budget to BBC4 I'd be a happy man. But then, I'm a selfish old curmudgeon, so make of that what you will.

Yes, good riddance to BBC3 if it helps safeguard BBC4's future.

On the younger demographic, the Beeb also struggle with Radio 1, I think. Isn't the average listener age about 30, even though it is suuposed to be targeted at 14-25 year olds (something like that I think)?

I suspect what they end up doing with both Radio 1 and BBC3 is reaching people of similarish ages to those who go for (say) Radio 2/4 and BBC2/4 (or whatever) but they prefer a more tabloidy output.

The Channel 4 family clearly need to step up to fill the gap here.

The perception of the channel as being heavily Macfarlane dependent may not have helped its future prospects.

Word is that it may become an online channel. Which could in principle mean the same for BBC4.

When it started, I was really looking forward to it and hoping it would succeed. However, it soon descended into an unending stream of unrelenting lowest-common-denominator crap.

If much of its current content ends up on BBC4, I'll be well pissed off!

Used to watch it for the cartoons at night, though I watch that elsewhere now. I'm sure family guy and american dad could be rescheduled onto BBC 2 and it's evening schedule, as I've noticed they rarely show content overnight, preferring to preview up and coming shows.

I shall not weep too much at the demise of a channel that spawned two pints of lager and a packet of crisps, and those investigative documentaries that involve a young lady traveling to some holiday destination whilst pretty much repeatedly saying inciteful things such as: 'the bad drug that young people are taking is bad', 'bad things are bad, and good things are good'.

I've read that there are plans to keep it alive, albeit as an online service to be accessed through iplayer.

Stacey Dooley wasn't bad, she did ask direct questions and talk to all kinds of people.

I think she's better than several more pretentious reporters.

Just as long as it's not going to be every single bloody night, as with BBC3.

I know what you mean, and certainly most of its factual stuff is hard to defend. But we come to the intractable "is this what they want or all they're given" debate. I'd like people who listen to 6Music to be presented with something more interesting than white guitar rock, but that doesn't stop them from playing Elbow all the time.

Every time I see something like the Daily Mash piece I hear these words going through my head:

"What do you think of spoof news sites?"
                                        "There's too many of them."
"That's one way of looking at it. Another is 'people like them, let's make some more of them.'"

Well, true, but there is no original programming on ITV2- it costs peanuts to run, relatively speaking, and this is strictly a financial decision not an aesthetic one.

If BBC we're going to make cuts from anywhere, I think they made the right choice.

For some reason, Elbow seem to have been adopted as the BBC's chosen band of the 20teens. To their credit, 6Music do vary their output - admittedly mainly via the specialist shows - and as I type are at least playing an old Credit to the Nation tune.

                                                Anyway, back on topic...
