The best TV channel for comedy ever?

Tonight has got a repeat (I think) of the Channel 4's 30 greatest comedy shows. Initially you think "Oh, another rundown show with talking heads" but, behind that, you realise that it has had some fantastic comedy over the last 30 years - Absolutely, Spaced, Brass Eye, Armstrong and Miller, Father Ted, Green Wing, Black Books etc. Not only that but they have imported all the great stuff from America - Golden Girls, Cheers, Roseanne, Frasier, Friends etc.

Outside of dedicated comedy channels (and, even then), it must be the best channel for comedy.

BBC 2 runs it close, but I think 4 wins in recent years (and especially if you include E4).

Selected BBC 2 shows and imports:

    Monty Python's Flying Circus
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
    Yes, Minister
    The Young Ones
    The Day Today
    The New Statesman
    The Office
    The Thick Of It
    Not The Nine O'Clock News
    Partridge
    Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle
    People Like Us
    Marion & Geoff
The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer
    Nighty Night
    Shooting Stars
    Seinfeld
    The Larry Sanders Show

      The New Statesman was ITV.

...and Vic and Bob started on Channel 4.

However, BBC2 was the main rival I was thinking. "Night Night" was also on there but it (and Gavin and Stacey) both started on BBC Three.

What is important is that C4 has treated the imports well over the years.

Lest we forget the fate of Seinfeld and Larry Sanders on BBC2. What time are they on? Are they on this week? Will they be on next week? Etc.

Indeed. Friday night, pizza and beers, Roseanne and Cheers (or 'Frasier', 'Friends' etc).

Actually, I forgot, I think they did "Due South", "Northern Exposure" and, certainly, "Scrubs"

Pretty sure BBC picked up Due South.

I think it used to be on before that New Adventures of Superman series with Teri Hatcher - or maybe it didn't, I can barely remember myself.

Anyway, late 80's/early 90's Friday nights on C4 definitely took some beating. Mind you, repeats they may be but on any given day it's possible to catch both George and Mildred and Man About The House on ITV4. A duo not to be sniffed at.

Aye, and without a laughter track.
