Is there a 'Family Guy' thread?

    Obviously there is now.

I have been hoovering up every TV episode recently, and I absolutely LOVE this.

    "Ass-scratchers? Ass-scratchers. Ass-scratcher?" "Ass-scratcher. "Ass-scratcher".

Quite the most howlingly funny piece of dialogue I have heard (and seen) in years. Of course, at 11:15pm my sense of humour is at its most puerile. (I laughed for about 20 minutes solid at Cartman with Tourettes)

As far as puerile goes, the 15 second clip in which Peter out-farts Michael Moore is probably my favourite of the whole series.

That and the description of a porn movie as being "exactly like Bang the Drum Slowly...only the drum is a chick"!

The missus is a big Family Guy fan, and goes nuts if I call it The Family Guy.

The other day I saw the one with the pisstake of the Sopranos finale, where Stewie shoots his mum dead on a cruise ship and becomes president of the world.

It's the sort of show I never want to watch, but when I do watch it, I find myself laughing my bollocks off.

Family Guy gets a bit of stick for being the poor-man’s Simpsons; yeah there are undoubted comparisons and yes it is puerile. But I like it as nothing is sacred and everyone is fair game for a bit of stick. And it is well written too.

It doesn’t always hit the mark (the scenes with old man Herbert are particularly excruciating) but comedy should do that more often. Too many programmes stay with what they believe to be a tried and tested formula based on what focus groups think might be funny. Somehow you get the impression that FG doesn’t rely on focus groups, unless they collate data on what might be deemed offensive.

Hard to pick a favourite scene; but I’ll go with the Naked Gun spoof where Stewie manages to infiltrate Osama Bin Laden’s secret hideout. It is epic.

Brian and Stewie make me laugh all the time. Family Guy is the show that I watch when I want to laugh. On the other hand my girlfriend doesn't get it at all and just goes into stony silence mode when I watch it.

The 100th episode was on the other night, and the writer/creator Seth McFarlane was interviewing (American) members of the public who absolutely hated it, and obviously didnt realise who he was. Brilliant.

Free clips and 5 full episodes here (although it is Fox Network)

I think my favorite episode was the one with the vomit contest.

A lot of people I know love it, but I'm not a big fan. I've watched a few episodes, and there are way more misses than hits for me. I never escape the feeling that its writers think it is a lot more clever than it actually is.

But then, I may not have seen the best episodes.

Nah, it's completely the other way round. Ever since discovering Family Guy, I've found the Simpsons a bit on the tame, predictable and safe side.

I'm not a fan of it, either, but I what I really don't get is why a person who doesn't like it couldn't just go off and do something else.

I watched a ton of the first three series (and loved it) when I lived in a shared house (and smoked too much weed.)

Anything after the third series, watched with an unclouded mind, just didn't do anything too much. I think they pandered to the audience a bit much, too many shit gags unrelated to what was going on, and far far far too many shitty pop culture references (a sign of lazy writing.)

Still, having said that, I fucking love Adam West. Adam West is great. Adam West isn't a tomato. Adam West wants to know if you're Sarah Connor, and how you know his language.

Ooh ooh ooh... speaking of Adam West, here he is (the actor, not the cartoon character) on Youtube, pissed up and threatening Jerry Lawler in a playful bantering kids tv manner. I love this clip as well.

I quite like family guy, but in very small doses. It doesn't wear as well on second viewing though, and lately the jokes just don't hit the mark enough. A lot of the enjoyment in it was killed for me by the Cartoon wars episodes of South park where it just crucified the style in which family guy is written.

It is much better though when they try and write a story in the episode, and I particularly liked the DVD which was essentially three episodes tied together. but I don't know if Seth mcFarlane can work within those confines, as the much more conventional American dad has really gone downhill after the first 10 episodes or sp,

True, but one of the things I loved about that episode is that while the criticisms of FG were completely valid and very harsh, they were all put in the mouths of deeply unsympathetic characters (Osama, Cartman). The sympathetic characters like Stan were all fans. I thought that was quite a classy/sophisticated move by Matt and Trey.

The quality definitely isn't what it was pre-hiatus, especially compared with SP's similar dividing line (the movie), but it's still pretty damn funny if you ask me. Just not as consistent.

I was thinking more of the manatees actually. It's very hard to comeback from that. I suppose it's fairly easy to predict then that my two favourite Family guy episodes are the Road episodes, which are both very sharp and cleverly written. Though there are still some very good gags, they're few and far between. "That was phillip seymour-hoffmann"

as for south park. If anything the movie was the thing that moved south park onto an entirely different plane.

You don't have to have discovered FG to know that. FG has its flaws, but everytime I watch it there are at least three perhaps four stonewall, bona-fide laugh-out-loud moments in every episode I've watched so far, and for a grumpy fucker like me, that's a good ratio. Other live comedies can't manage that. That said, I can't really warm to it like I can the best episodes of the Simpsons. The FG characters are simply cyphers through which the scriptwriters gag machines work while Groening's bunch are far more well-rounded and worked out.

But I must be the only one irked to high heaven by baby Stewie. I can't get my head around that crappy, undernourished and forced English accent. Next to him, I like the old man.

I thought the "manatee" episode of South Park was pathetic, actually. I had no idea Parker and Stone felt so threatened by Family Guy - it was a sad sight given how raw and confident the early South Parks were.

An episode I saw the other day had Stewie dressed as a teenager and going to High School. It ends with him revealing himself as a toddler and walking down the school corridor naked. It was accompanied by Bob Dylan's Hurricane. The scene seemed familiar, was it an imitation of a movie?

Great show, by the way. My favourite scene was when Stewie finds out that Brian has a girlfriend, and breaks into a manic, piss-taking soliloquay - "You Ugly, You Ugly...".

I think my favourite FG bit is just after that bit impact substitute, where Stewie puts his mix tape on in the car with 'Cars' on it.

                                                  "Brian had sex
                                                  with his really dumb girlfriend
now he's taking his friend Stewie
                                                  to have some ice cream
                                                  in his car"
