OTF 100 Greatest Films of All Time Poll

For Sight and Sound invited critics vote every decade and the list that gets the most votes wins. They aren't rated. Mentions on the list is enough,

    Let's do the same here.

    1 entry per person.

I propose a closing date is Christmas Eve 24th December,

    First list by kokamoa

    Annie Hall
    Back to the Future
    Citizen Kane
    Les Enfants du Paradis
    Mean Streets
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    The General (1926)
    There Will Be Blood
    Vampyr
    Woman in Chains

I'll have a go, though in a few minutes I'll probably think of something else I should have included.

    Taxi Driver
    East of Eden
    Sunset Boulevard
    The Graduate
Obchod na Korze (The Shop on Main Street)
    The Lives of the Others
    In the Mood for Love
    Apocalypse Now
    The Blair Witch Project
    The Ice Storm

These are my choices on this particular day and time. Could change in a week or so, but at guess maybe half of them would be still there. A few more may occur to me before the deadline so presumably adding (and subtracting is permitted?)

        The Maltese Falcon
        Double Indemnity
        Bonnie And Clyde
        2001; A Space Odyssey
        Miracle of Morgan's Creek
        Dr Strangelove
        The Front Page (1931)
        Detour
        Pandora's Box
        Harold and Maude

        (edited (sob!) to10 only).

These six are absolutely nailed on for me
          • The Battle of Algiers
          • The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
          • Once Upon a Time in the West
          • Au Revoir Les Enfants
          • The Kid
          • Dekalog

          These change according to mood
          • Paths of Glory
          • A Man Escaped
          • Jules et Jim
          • Cabaret
NB: I know Dekalog was originally a TV series but the first time I saw it was at the cinema, shown in four screenings across two days in London

I think you have to come up with a list of ten films. All are ranked equally. Then the list is compiled based on number of mentions.

I've started thinking about my list and it's going to take some work.

Nor me. Is it one film per decade?

No, it was just mentioned that Sight and Sound compile their list once a decade.

For now, I think you're simply meant to come up with a list of your best films. I assumed it was ten as the OP had ten, but maybe not.

Rebel Without a Cause is the best film. Problem is that if it doesn't make the list I'll be sad.

Apologies for any lack of clarity.

Come up with a list of your ten films - order doesn't matter.

The films are ranked according to those with the most votes.

If anyone wants to make TonTon smile at Krismas you may need to choose your 9 favourite films...

I'm going to end up embarrassingly anglophone and Hollywood and post-1960 (and pretty male dominated). Also, I'll change my mind many times when I see other additions to this list and realise what I've forgotten, but it's now set in internet-stone.

                                    Fargo
                                    Silent Running

                                          Custody** The Brood

                                          * I'm assuming that's allowed seeing as 1) that segment is 43 minutes long which is longer than some of the films in the Sight & Sound list and 2) if Dekalog is allowed then surely we're already playing fast and loose with the definition of 'a film'

** I ummed and ahhhed about this one as it's the only one on the list I've only seen once. I've never had a more intense reaction to a film before though so it probably deserves its place. I would strongly recommend to anyone considering watching it for the first time not to read any review or synopsis longer than a sentence as they all seem to mention very quickly the theme of the film which is a massive spoiler

EDIT (might not be the last): having slept on it I think there's a bit of recency bias when it comes to the last two (but not Kevin) so I've edited accordingly

Also excitingly all those film discussions have made me realise that I haven't seen many of them in the last couple of years and my huge list of films I'd like to watch isn't going to watch itself. So I've set myself the goal of watching at least one film a week over the next year, preferrably not ones I've seen before.

First instalment at the Fussbudget cineclub tonight was La Nuit Américaine, 10/10 would watch again but then again I'm a sucker for a good mise en abîme. I got slightly distracted by how bad everyone's teeth were in that though, not something you see much on film stars these days (I would say it took me out of the film but the film is already doing that)

The French title is much better as it works on a number of levels (with American-ness being a shorthand for glamorous and seductive on the one hand but fake and artificial on the other, which is essentially the duality the film revolves around) but there's no way to keep that in translation.

sw2boro will often tell that story of me ordering a Coke with my meal in a Parisian brasserie and the waiter derisively replying "oh, du vin américain?" That word is often very loaded when used by French people, as I'm sure you're well aware
