    Alternate Futures

    Alternate Endings.

Some of them are a lot better than the preferred versions. Some of them are just a load of old bollocks, but I find them pretty interesting nonetheless.

Die Hard With A Vengeance - McClane tracks Simon down to some cafe in eastern Europe and has a game of Russian Roulette...with a rocket launcher. Not as daft as it sounds, its pretty well done, which begs the question why it wasn't used in place of the awful helicopter 'say hello to your brother' finale.

Alien Resurrection - The film itself is daft but the ending that was planned brought a bit of closure to the series, where the Betty lands on Earth in what appears to be a decimated Paris, France.

The Thing - The ending as fine as it is but the original ending had Macready being picked up by CIA types and taken back to HQ for questioning.

First Blood - Rambo commits suicide.

Rambo III - Rambo decides that he wants to stay in Afghanistan and fight those commie rotters. Trautman reluctantly lets him go and says his goodbyes.

The Thing? No, thank you. The ambiguity of it fits very nicely and it's fine as it is.

    First Blood? Oh, fuck, yes.

Thelma and Louise - a parachute deploys from the boot of the car and it lands safely at the bottom of the ravine.

Star Wars - Darth Vader annihilates Luke Skywalker and co after the first 15 minutes. This somewhat disappointing (and brief) sci fi romp proves a flop at the box office, triggering a steep decline in the cultural influence of Hollywood and the Americanisation of global culture in general, resulting in people using the word "alternative" rather than "alternate".

I dunno - maybe someone needs to invent the 'double groove DVD' so that the plotline flip-flops between two variations on each playing. It'd be immensely frustrating when you were trying to show a friend the brilliant scene where Hugh Grant emotes, but it would at least fulfil the criteria for 'alternate'.

            ******West Wing Spoilers*******

Apparently the final series of The West Wing was supposed to end on Arnie Vinnick winning a close election. However, John Spencer who played Leo (chief of Staff and later Vice Presidential Nominee) died during the filming of the last series, so they decided to change it for Santos winning.

Silence of the Lambs - Hannibal Lecktor doesn't engineer an improbable escape from his maximum security detention, nor indeed proves to be any more help to FBI agent Clarice Starling than rambling incoherently to himself about his paintings in his cell while masturbating furiously in full view of her during her visits.

The First Blood 'Rambo Suicide' was actually filmed and is on the ultimate edition DVD. Its pretty good too, with Rambo sobbing his guts out and basically saying that he is nothing if he doesn't have a war to fight, and that everyone he knew is dead. He then grabs Trautmans hand and indicates that he wants his mentor to kill him. Trautman delays and is rather reluctant but Rambo grabs his arm and pulls the trigger himself...

                The end.

Ironically, its the ending Stallone preferred.
