History of British Broadcasting: London Reports in Billboard Magazine, 1953 onwards

As I am researching the charts in this magazine, I thought I would summarize its London reports, which I'll do every time I read one:

3.1.53 p.2 and 35: The Queen has ordered that the Coronation will be televised. TV can reach 77% of the population but the Tory govt will not extend this further because iron and steel are needed for armaments. TV manufactures are upset about this.

21.2.53 Sweets taken off rationing; cinemas worried this will reduce their only sales of sweets. Parliament defeats Sunday bill so the law still bans any artist from performing in costume or make-up on a Sunday, even for charity.
