I'd like to add Phoenix Nights and Man About The House to my list. I watched the latter a few years ago and was very surprised at how well it had held up.

Goddammit! How did I forget one of my all-time, perhaps absolute, favourites: Rising Damp.

Impossible to meaningfully narrow it down to 10, so here's an arbitrary assortment of great shows, excluding animated shows which have their own thread:

          Better Off Ted
          Spaced
          The Day Today
          Jam
          Partridge
          Arrested Development
          Darkplace
          Larry Sanders
          Black Books
          The Thick Of It

Speaking of Better Off Ted, these Veridian Dynamics commercials might be a good intro for the people who weren't familiar with it.

Modern Family…. Is this the first mention on this thread?
              QI (the Stephen Fry era)
              HIGNFY (the Angus Deayton era)
              Father Ted
              Cheers
              Blackadder
Fast Show (doubt this has aged well)
              Drop The Dead Donkey (ditto)
              Schitts Creek
              Simpsons back in the day

Just starting into Parks+Rec on Netflix, looks good

In my mind, Parks & Rec and Community are the same show. I know they're not, of course. Anyway, which is better?

Parks and Recreation is by far the better one from my perspective. But that's because I don;t get Community. It is aimed at an audience way younger than me

Honestly, you'd be surprised how well it stands up. It's arguably more about office politics than the headline stuff.

Oh, yeah, Parks and Rec. Just shows how arbitrary my list is.

Since you're here, GY, we're in love with the first three seasons of AD....but S4 is such a let down. Do we stick with it?

Apart from the Damian character. People these days would look at that and wonder what was funny.

Probably not, but it depends on how prone you are to being spoiled when things fall off in quality. I thought season 5 was OK, apart from some jarring bits, and better than 4, but it's nowhere near as good as 1-3. At least it doesn't suffer from the problem 4 had of not being able to get the cast together for scenes.

You're certainly not missing out on anything by not carrying on. 1-3, as abbreviated as it was, is the good stuff.

An egotistical, selfish, lying man-child trying to ladle on the bravado to cover up his personal shame that he's still a virgin in his 30s? If they ever reboot the show, he'd just be in charge of Globelink's social media department, wouldn't he?

Given the mentions of The Young Ones upthread it was coincidental that I saw this today about the reason why it featured a band every week :

I really liked Better Off Ted as well. Shameful cancellation decision.

The comedy shows that get quoted a lot in chez Thistle are
                                              Seinfeld
                                              Dharma & Greg

                                              Recently we've really enjoyed
                                              The Good Place
                                              Kim's Convenience

Shows that were unmissable for the first few series
                                              Brooklyn Nine Nine
                                              Modern Family

Recently we watched the entire run of Frasier. At times that was pure gold.

When I was a kid I used to love Red Dwarf. I haven't watched the most recent series.

Other series we've enjoyed a lot in the past
                                              My Name is Earl
                                              Chuck
                                              Community
                                              Parks & Recreation
                                              The Big Bang Theory
                                              Everybody Loves Raymond

(No UK sitcoms in this list)

The 1st ever episode of One Foot in the Grave set the tone: goes to a night class to get out of the house, ends up stuck in a room with a corpse that someone thought was the model for the make-up\beauty class. I was hooked, anyway.
