I'm not sure I could name 10 drama series that I've watched. I much prefer factual programmes or sitcoms. I've certainly seen few of those mentioned so far.

The only ones that spring to mind, and all of which I loved but I've ranked as best I can, are:

          1. Twin Peaks
          2. Hill Street Blues
          3. This Life
          4. Chernobyl

Oh, I quite enjoyed Penny Dreadful: City of Angels last year.

Not a great haul from four decades of TV watching as an adult though. There must be some others. I'll muse on it.

                    Breaking Bad
                    Chernobyl
                    Succession
                    The Americans
                    Better Call Saul
                    Manhattan
                    Billions
                    Friday Night Lights
                    Twin Peaks
                    West Wing

It's very heavy on modern American "prestige" TV, isn't it?

Having racked my brains, all I have to offer in no real order is:-

                      The Wire
                      Cracker
                      Quantum Leap
                      Breaking Bad
                      Justified

Off the top of my head, which is going to favour recent or recently repeated shows, and in no particular order

                        Callan
                        I, Claudius
                        The Sweeney
                        Hill Street Blues
                        State of Play
                        Mad Men
                        The Shield
                        Rome
                        Borgen
                        The Killing

I'd also like to add 'Inside No. 9'. I know that it's not a conventional drama series, but although there's often some very dark humour, it tends more towards the dramatic. There's the occasional miss of course, but when they get it right ('12 Days Of Christine' for example), Shearsmith and Pemberton have produced some of the most memorable TV moments of recent years.

Excellent call gjw100. Alongside the episode you mention, 'Inside Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room' and 'Misdirection' were absolutely outstanding. Highly recommended to those yet to see.

Again, in no order, apart from Crown Court being at the top.

                                    - Crown Court
                                    - The Prisoner
                                    - The Avengers
                                    - UFO
                                    - Mad Men
                                    - Spooks
                                    - 1990
                                    - The Streets of San Francisco
                                    - Starsky & Hutch
                                    - Tales of the Unexpected.

I thought there might be more love for Deutschland 83, 86 and 89 around here.

                                      My favourite anyway.

                                        1. Lonesome Dove
                                        2. NYPD Blue
                                        3. Hill Street Blues
                                        4. The Wire
                                        5. Spooks
                                        6. The Bill (half hour series not the one hour nonsense)
                                        7. Deadwood
                                        8. Star Trek Voyager
                                        9. Band of Brothers
                                        10. Game of Throne (last series not withstanding)
Harder than I expected: West Wing, I Claudius, The Sweeney, The A-Team, all in the running at their peaks.

Aw yeah, Public Eye is an excellent shout.

I really liked series 1 of The Wire a lot, but when I started to watch series 2 I just thought yeah, enough with this. I'm told it gets brilliant later on but I find modern TV's propensity to shove out oodles of episodes quite exhausting.

I remember liking that Vietnam thing that Paul McGann was in but no idea how it would look now.
