    The Bell Tolls for Screech

    RIP Dustin Diamond a/k/a Screech.

    Cancer.

Screech and Urkel may have been two of the more memorable characters created from the wasteland of 90s television, but if I got stuck watching Saved By The Bell, he always made it worthwhile. For 3 and a half minutes.

Very weird guy, with the porn tape and selling t-shirts to save his house on Howard Stern, but at least he wasn't boring.

Never knowingly watched the show but I knew who he was because he became a cultural marker. I think Saved by the Bell was one of those programmes that was huge in America but didn't export very well.

He made Le Monde, as Sauv?s par le gong was on French TV

It was on UK kids tv on Saturdays in the early 90s. Tiffany Amber Thiessen, I vaguely seem to recall, might have been in it.

He was forever at that bloody school though wasn't he. While the other kids graduated and went off to college he remained roaming the corridors until he was patently too old to be a student. So they made him a teacher.

Like so many kid actors, he was kind of a tragic figure. Sad news.

Masterful and uncharacteristic understatement there by the boy Rogin.

Saved by the Bell was massive on Saturday morning in the early-mid 90s on Channel 4 - just after Transworld Sport and before Football Italia. To a kid who was between 8 and 13 in those years, it was staple viewing.

Screech actually did go to College in the one series of Saved by the Bell-The College Years, and he was Zack's best man for the wedding (yes I watched all of them), but Diamond was typecast by that point.

I would regularly spring my dad watching SBtB on a Saturday mid-morning, while he thought nobody was home. It became an ongoing trope in our relationship.

I must remember to tell him that ol’ Screech has passed.

Urkel is the one that means nothing really in the UK. I know him only from the odd hip hop lyric and seeing five minutes of Family Matters in Germany once.

Yeah, that's one pop culture reference that really didn't travel - Jaleel White is arguably better known here for being the voice of Sonic The Hedgehog in those 90s cartoons. A staple of Saturday mornings on Channel 4 for donkey's years... not unlike Saved By The Bell for that matter.
