How many nations can you name a film from?

Inspired by the Mundane Thread (something of a contradiction in terms, that...), how about a challenge? State a country and, without googling, name a film primarily associated with it. How many different nations (not films) can people get?

I suggest putting the answers in white,* so examples don't get 'used up' and others can have a fresh go themselves. And self-mark and score, though I would suggest a criteria of +1 point for every country/film combination correctly identified, and -2 for any incorrect associations. Just to deter speculative answers - only if you absolutely know Plan 9 from Outer Space is an American film should you list that. [reach for the stars, eh?]

    * - [color(equals sign)white]your answers[/color]

Oh, and if you think of others after posting your first set of answers, feel free to tag them on.

Russia (technically Soviet Union) - Battleship Potemkim
    France - Delicatessen
    Italy - The Bicycle Thieves
Poland - A Short Film about Killing
    UK - Naked
    R.Ireland - The Commitments
USA - Plan 9 from Outer Space

That sounds like it would take a while. Might wait until I'm back on my laptop. All that typing on a phone is a young person's game

Annoyingly I have a really good film in my DVD collection which is actually from the country I was wrong about. But I didn't think of it before posting.

Hang on. What does "primarily associated with it" mean? Let's say Gallipoli as an example. That's an Australian film in some ways very associated with Australia but largely set in Turkey (and titled after a Turkish place)

Yes, I find assigning nationalities to films to be fraught in many cases.

Director's nationality? What if s/he lives and works in another country and/or has dual nationality?

Studio? Is that really relevant, especially in a world where finding is almost always multinational? Is the Wolf of Walk Street a Malaysian film because the money to make it was stolen from its citizens?

Setting? Virtually all contemporary blockbusters are set in fictional worlds.

That's a good example - I would class that as an Australian film. Where it's set is probably the least important element here, followed by where it was filmed. Director/crew/studio involved/financing, that sort of thing is what I'm after. Which countries film industry the film would be seen as part of, basically.
Sometimes it gets complicated - Kubrick, for example. British films or American ones? I would go with American, because the money behind them and the studio releasing an American director's films were American, even if the actual filming was in Britain.

                      Hence 'primarily'
And where it's ambiguous (which is fairly often, I agree), just try and pick a different example that isn't!

Ok, so every time I woke up last night I found myself pondering on this, and in the end produced a fairly long list (though it shows me that i need to see more South American and African films)

35 or 40 depending on the rules which I'm still not entirely certain of. I think 35.

I can name a couple of Gollywood films because the trailers went viral a few years ago - 2016 and Obonsam Besu.

I like how many of ad hoc's ones are either the same as mine, or ones that I seriously considered including and then opted for something equally applicable (UK, Spain, Russia in the latter case). Except he got the Mexican one that I should have name. Damn him.

[and I would only count the final one of those at the end. Sorry. The others are British, American, American, American and respectively - the countries where the films are set contributed very little to the things actually getting created]

But I've thought of one more, which had been irritating me as I couldn't recall the title

Austria - Funny Games (original, not the remake)

Use the full editor and in the fourth box along, you'll see an underlined capital A with a small downward-pointing triangle next to it. This is the text colour option - just change it to white.

Can I claim two for Russia and CCCP?

I'd say so. You've reminded me that the last film I saw is classed as Russia/Armenia on MUBI and I don't know how to account for that.

Sorry to disappoint. I've seen about 10 movies since my daughter was born and I started my career in education. Being that our cells are completely recycled every 7 years, I'm literally not the man I was almost times 2. But this will be good anti-dementia practice...

My memory of it is that only a small amount of it takes place in Turkey.

Yes, you;re probably right, thinking about it. Anyway, some of the films I chose in my actual list that Janik rejected (entirely reasonably, I think), make the point better. The Third Man, for example, is entirely set in Austria, but is not an Austrian film, and likewise with Out of Africa and Kenya.

We were going for self-marking, so I'm accepting everything people have put in. If I can't define the rules clearly, then I can't quibble.
