Fat Man and Little Boy (1989) fits the timeline and is the right subject matter, but I've never seen it. Paul Newman leads a decent looking cast.

I watched an interview with Bruce Robinson earlier this week, where he says that that movie is the reason why he and Roland Joffe still don't speak to each other.
