Good on those who walked out. I’m disappointed that Robert Harris consented to Polanski directing An Officer And A Spy as I’d love to see a movie adaptation of a book I really enjoyed. Assuming an author would have that sort of control - or do you just sell the rights before the director is confirmed?

Normally a book is optioned and then a screenplay is written by a different person - someone familiar with writing scripts rather than books. But Harris co-wrote the screenplay with Polanski, and it was their third movie outing together, so I think a 'fuck you' to Harris would not be out of line.
