    The Voice

I make a point of studiously avoiding X-Factor and its ilk, so didn't expect to commenting on a reality music show, but the opening episode of this was actually watchable. Basically, a panel of professional musicians (Brian Kennedy, Kian Egan and Sharon Corr in RTE's version) turn their backs to the stage, rating/slating the performers solely on their voice. What raises this above the dross, however, is that the musicians select their trainees on what their own recording background can add to the contestant's development, so the crows are weeded out early. Of course, once the auditions end and the live stage begins, it'll probably revert to the usual formulaic muck, but expect to be pleasantly surprised when the BBC version launches.

The American version is really popular. I think it did better than X Factor here.
