When Fleming created the characters a Commander in the navy would have been the equivalent rank to a major in the army. It was in the 70s or 80s I think that naval ranks began to be upgraded, possibly as at the time we were putting much more bright and shiny weapons onboard smaller ships that commanders were in charge of, and using those smaller ships in many more tactical operations like the Falklands.

The only James Bond question I would ever ask is '"When are they going to stop making James Bond movies?"
Let's face it, the whole subject has been done to death by now, especially once they had filmed all the Fleming books. I never bother to watch the newer ones with Daniel Craig, even on TV.

The Brosnan ones were pretty much just filmed to make a legal point, after McCrory had dragged Eon through the courts for the best part of a decade, during which they could only produce the cartoon series, while Casino Royale had never received the "proper" Bond treatment, which set in motion the Craig story arc, so yes, only for the moolah, it would have died off after Licence to Kill.
