The greatest ever cast in a forgotten film

Robin and Marian from 1976 (?) is on Channel 4 at the moment, and what an absolute joy it is (so far).

How about this for a cast:

    Sean Connery as Robin Hood
    Richard Harris as King Richard
    Audrey Hepburn as Maid Marian
Robert Shaw as the Sheriff of Nottingham
(the incomparable) Nicol Williamson as Little John
    Denholm Elliott as Will Scarlet
    Ronnie Barker as Friar Tuck
    Ian Holm as King John

Frankly I don't really care how crap the film ends up, it's a joy seeing all this lot on the screen at the same time.

I'm using "forgotten" as a polite euphemism for "not exactly a classic".

I've not heard of anyone in that cast apart from Robert Duvall.

Off the top of my head, I'd nominate Oh What A Lovely War

The cream of 60s British actors in that one.

              'The Score'

              2001 run of the mill "one last job" heist movie with no exceptional features apart from the cast;

              Robrt De Niro
              Marlon Brando
              Edward Norton
              Angela Bassett

I know Joe Don Baker, but mainly because two of his movies were on MST3K episodes. He's been in some big films, though--Cool Hand Luke, Charlie Varrick, The Natural, Fletch, Cape Fear, Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies.

Joe Don Baker seemed to spend some time in the UK in the eighties and appeared in Edge Of Darkness.

You should stay in more, Lucia.

As for the others, trust me on this one.

I've never heard of it before. But I suppose that doesn't make it "forgotten" for me...

He's one of those guys who's in everything, but you'd never know his name until you read his obit. (Not that I'm suggesting he's dead.) Stephen Tobolowsky is the same. (Not dead either.)

Williamson also stole the show in The Bofors Gun, another one of this canon I would suggest, which featured David Warner, John Thaw, Peter Vaughan (aka Groutie in Porridge) and the ubiquitous (and aforementioned) Ian Holm.

The greatest ever cast in a forgotten film

The IMDb has a good biog of him.

His career may have been hampered by his difficult personality:

Williamson's reputation was tarred by his erratic behavior during the North American tour of "Hamlet". In Boston he stopped during a performance and berated the audience, which led one cast member to publicly apologize to the Boston audience.

Even before the Boston incident, Williamson had made headlines when, during the Philadelphia tryout of "Inadmissible Evidence," he struck producer David Merrick [...]. In 1976 he slapped a fellow actor during the curtain call for the Broadway musical "Rex." Fifteen years later, his co-star in the Broadway production of "I Hate Hamlet" was terrified of him after Williamson whacked the actor on his buttocks with a sword, after the actor had abandoned the choreography.

'The Bofors Gun' is a fine film. Richard Harris is supposed to have said that Nicol Williamson drank more than him, O'Toole and Burton combined which may go some way to explaining things.

I fell in love with Williamson as Merlin in John Boorman's Excalibur, and love the story that Boorman deliberately cast him opposite Helen Mirren as Morgana because they absolutely detested each other off-set.
