    Oscars 2011

Nominations in half an hour - anyone want to make any last-minute predictions for surprise nominees? Will any foreign language films be among the 10 nominated for best picture, for example?

The nominations are making me realize I saw hardly anything last year. Exit Through the Gift Shop, The Ghost Writer, and Strange Powers and I think that was about it.

Is The Social Network really that good?

Its a great movie, but not really a good description of what facebook is all about.

I think Toy Story 3 is the first movie nominated for Best Picture that I saw in the theaters during its original release in something like 5 years. I had a feeling that TS3 would get a best picture nomination with the expanded field, but I was really pleasantly surprised that it was nominated for Best Screenplay.

The Social Network is next on our Netflix queue. Guess I should add Inception, The Kids Are All Right, and Winter's Bone as well.

Really glad the Banksy film got nominated. I wonder who'll pick it up if he wins. Mr Brainwash maybe?

And really looking forward to True Grit and Winter's Bone.

Wankfest though the Oscars are, the fun is in predicting.

            Best Movie
The Academy might want to show its hipness and go for The Social Network. But the dearth of nominations count against it. So The King's Speech it is.

            Best Actor
            Done deal. Colin Firth.

            Best Actress
Annette Benning. Gotta keep sweet with Warren. Plus she's a married woman playing a lesbian. That's how Dustin Hoffman got his Oscar for Rain Men. Portman is young; she'll get it another year.

            Best Director
If King's Speech wins the Best Picture category, than Tom Hooper wins director. Otherwise it might be Fincher for The Social Network.

            Best Supporting Actor
Christian Bale. I shall enjoy appreciating the lovely smile of the female companion he had at the Golden Globes.

            Best Supporting Actress
The heart says Melissa Leo, the gut says Amy Adams. It'll be Amy Adams, won't it?

            Script - Original
The Fighter. Just a hunch, but it probably will be.

            Script - Adapted
            The Social Network

            Foreign language film
            Biutiful (Mexico)

            Documentary (Feature)

Restrepo. Bank on it. In fact, if there are bookies in SA who take bets on the Oscars, I'll put a tenner on it winning.

I honestly don't understand what you mean by this. Does the Academy really give a shit about Warren Beatty these days, considering he hasn't made a film for over ten years now?

Remarkably, I've seen almost everything this year, except 127 Hours. Being trapped in a small space is one of my few primal fears. I don't ever want to hike the slot canyons in Utah or go spelunking. Not sure I want to see that.

I also haven't seen Blue Valentine, Rabbit Hole, or The Illusionist because they haven't come to my theatre-deficient backwater.

I think The Kings Speech is the best film, but Helena Bonham Carter is barely in it enough to warrant a nomination. But she's a fine actress, so I wouldn't mind seeing her win.

It's not central to my hunch thast Benning will win, but the guy is well connected. Put it like this: if his wife doesn't win, he won't have horse heads planted in beds, but being married to Beatty gives Benning a headstart.

I recently read Peter Biskind's typically excellent autobiography of Beatty and I think by now most of his old connections won't be returning his calls.

It seems Beaty made lots of acquaintances but very few friends during his tenure as an authentic A-lister and his absence as a major Hollywood player hasn't caused floods of tears. For every admirer willing to praise him there appeared to be a queue of former colleagues more than ready to make public their contempt of the man.

If Bening prevails it might be despite of Beatty rather than because of him.

This must be one of the lows in movie history, when you look at the films up there competing.
The Social Network was OK, The King's Speech was quite good, but it's hardly films you'll buy for your DVD collection or in 20 years look back and think how brilliant they were.

If I were a member of the Academy I'd vote for Toy Story 3.

What a fucking upset that would be!

Hardly, it's a much better group than in some past years. Every single one in the final ten is better than Gladiator or Titanic or Crash.

I think Black Swan might be a bit overrated. The first 2/3 to 3/4 are very good, but then it gets a bit OTT toward the end and the ending is unsatisfying. I felt like "Yeah, we get it. She's having a psychotic break. Now what?" But there was no now what? It just kind of ends. Great performances, however.

                            This would be my ballot:
Italics indicates I haven't seen it yet.
                            Bold would be my pick
