    sick and twisted movies?

even though i don't celebrate Christmas i still get presents for the family and my sister loves movies so dvds are a safe bet.

She loves the full on torture porn and ultra violent style and last year i got her Visitor Q and Audition. So this year i need to better that.

Can anyone point me towards some really sick and twisted movies? The more sick or disturbing the better!

      oh yes.

She says she is hardcore, that she can handle anyhting horror wise. I want to get her something that will make her rethink that.

If she actually enjoys all that shit, just buy her a few dead chickens, a hammer and a hacksaw and she can film it for herself.

Cannibal Holocaust is suitably unpleasant. You could also try and find an uncut version of Last House on the Left.

You could get that one that at one point involves a bloke getting his thumbs cut off under torture, and ends up with the heroine dying a slow and horrible death from dehydration in a cave because her only hope of salvation is unable to reach her in time.

The English Patient , I think it was called.

Or there's that one where a young refugee girl accidentally causes the death of someone on her arrival in a new country, that leads to her getting caught up in a chain of events that leads to her, and three adult male travellers, going on a road trip that leads to more death and destruction, with horrific supernatural entities chasing them at every turn.

Can't remember the name of that one but it had Judy Garland in it.

What about that one where a young bloke gets caught up fighting in a bloody war, that eventually leads to his sister and her boyfriend being horribly tortured by alien things that are half-men, half pigs, and then he has his hand chopped off by his own Dad in a swordfight?

That one was part of a trilogy, but the sequel was rubbish, it had teddy bears in it.

You could try the Fantom Kiler series (which I haven't seen), which combine the slasher film and porn genres.

Makes a change from It's A Wonderful Life, I suppose. And red is a Christmassy colour.

                        'A Serbian Film'.

I've read the synopsis (beware: spoilers, obviously!) and I never want to see it. It brought me out in a cold sweat.

I think this is probably the grimmest film I've ever seen.

I always found "Audition" and its ilk a bit contrived, while stuff like "Cannibal Holocaust" is great, but a bit nudge-wink, essentially a fun movie for people with a sick sense of humour. "Men Behind The Sun" isn't just gruesome, it has an authentic bleakness, and is thoroughly depressing and exhausting. I think it would be ideal.

Ugh, I couldn't make it through the review of that, Taylor. The "rectally prolapses" made me pause, but when I got to a mention of a mother and a daughter, I had to stop reading.

I see no appeal in watching horror movies. Even when I was a cynical obnoxious teenager I couldn't stand them. I don't think it's an intolerance for violence, because I love gangster films. I think it's the glee in the violence. But there are other movies that I find disturbing for different reasons. I can appreciate Requiem For A Dream as a fine film, but I don't think I could sit through it again. It just made me very depressed, and I didn't enjoy watching it.

Well, y'see... I like horror films, but most of these aren't really 'horror'. They're 'terror' or 'shock' films.

While I like horror films, I can't stand violence against women or animals ...and I'm squeamish too, so most violence against people altogether is out! Thus, it's more the 'classic' stuff that I find entertaining, where atmosphere and intimation are the emphasis, rather than explicitness of gore or intensity of shock.

I enjoyed Mark Gatiss' history of horror on the BBC recently, but I share his distaste for 'slasher' films and - obviously and deliberately - the films mentioned on this thread err more towards that end of the 'horror' spectrum.

I would suggest Martyrs, as it's the nastiest most offensive film I've seen in a long time, but I don't want anyone making any money out of it as I hate it so much. Tell you what, download it illegally for her.

I've never seen Audition, although I've had it recommended so many times. I'm with clive, in that I really don't like all that torture-porn nonsense, so is it pretty graphic?

Those old Peter Jackson gore-fests are great though. I think you need the humour to make the rest palatable.

Audition is really a romantic comedy. I think you ought to see it as it's a great piece of film-making. but you may need to cover your eyes at one or two places.

I hate the 'torture-porn' moniker. I mean how many films does this apply to exactly? The Hostel and Saw series? That's hardly a genre. I mean is Marathon Man torture-porn? Or The Texas Chain Saw Massacre?

It's more of a reflection that the likes of Eli Roth have managed to make slasher films and forgot to add any suspense or any sympathy for the main characters.

Well exactly. It's a rather good film with a single torture scene in it.

Well... That's 10 films straight away, so maybe! But yeah, it's just a lazy short-hand for "shit 00's horror", I suppose.

And no-one said Audition was funny before. I'll certainly give it a go now.

Wasn't Evil Dead banned in England?

And I remember being terrified and a little queasy when I saw Hellraiser, which I imagine will seem a bit soft these days.

                                            How far we've come.

(But I'll second Salo: the Martin Peters of sick and twisted).

Less actual torture & that but describable as twisted, what about A Hole in my Heart? - there's a lot of gross stuff in there, but it's really funny and really good.

If she wants really horrible, then I guess Flower of Flesh and Blood or August Underground's Mordum would probably do it. Like Clive, I read the precis of A Serbian Film and can't countenance anyone wanting to see it, never mind sitting through to the end.

We've kind of had this discussion before; body horror can be affecting and amusing; more than one of us has been amused by Tetsuo: Iron Man before now, and GY can recommend a mental film involving deep fried limbs and machine gun arms, buggered if I can remember the name of it though.
