I thought the Ben Mendelsohn character was a lispless Vargo Hoat (he certainly looked like him and chopped Jamie's hand off).
But the Sapphire line, I was waiting two seasons for the Sapphire line.

Ho hum. Two episodes in, two episodes of various nondescript characters meandering around and discussing their plans. There has to be a cut off point somewhere.

in the short term maybe, but beyond that... no. the story just keeps getting larger and more diffuse, with clusters of multiplying characters drifting further and further apart in an ever-expanding universe. i don't believe GRR martin has any idea of how to finish it. assuming the TV series keeps getting renewed, it catches up with the books in 2015 (i suppose they could split the fifth book in two, but that would make for two quite boring series). he might have the sixth book ready in time for the convergence, but he says there is supposed to be seven, and based on how long the last couple took, they won't be done in time. i suppose he'll just crank out any old shite under deadline pressure and call it a wrap, which might be the best thing for everybody.

Probably, but I predict he'll kill-off a bunch of characters, have the key ones reunite against the Others and it'll end with the seven kingdoms being reborn as a democratic republic.

          Or he'll kark-it first.

I managed to catch the end , sans musique, on You Tube.
            Far better.
The music could have come in at the end of Jaime's scream and been just as , if not more effective, and far more "right".

            Anyway, poor fellow.

I'm really curious, but I don't want anyone to tell me, how Joffrey would react upon learning that Jaime is his father. Would he chop off their heads or would he chop off Jaime's dick and lock them in a dungeon cell together for the rest of their lives...

If you're a fan of Dany, you'll love the current episode. And if you're not, there's still plenty to enjoy.

I've made it up to episode 3 now. No major complaints from me, though I do wonder where they are going with this Podrick joke.

The small council scene from Episode 3 is basically so good as to justify there being a TV show at all. Put all your scene-stealers in one scene and let them have a few minutes of silence. Brilliant. The actor who does Varys is so hilarious in it, just rewatch it and focus on him.

That was a good scene. I do wonder what Varys is up to. I can't tell if he's double-crossing the double-crosser Little Finger or if he's working for him. My gut tells me it's the former, but my gut also tells me not to trust my gut.

Ooh, that really got me wracking my brains - I was sure he was told by Tyrian at the end of the first series, which is why he had Ned Stark killed? But I don't think that's the case.

I guess he's so self-obsessed, that the fact the entire continent is at war because they believe him to be a bastard hasn't really sunk in with him yet! Or, that even if he did know the truth, he's realised that whole life depends upon the hope that it never gets verified. So he chooses to ignore it.

Seeing as how Joff was probably responsible for all the baby murderingness at the end of season 1, beginning of season 2, it is a fair guess to say he knows, and is doing his best to cover it up.

My memory may be playing tricks, but I'm pretty sure Cersei's responsible for both. Joffrey's obviously directly responsible for Ned's beheading, but he dies because Cersei wants him dead. And the bastards are directly her doing.

That's the way I saw it too. Joffrey seemed to dismiss the truth as an ugly rumour, but he might just be in denial because he finds the idea of it repulsive.

Oddly, this is one spot the books and tv show vary. The books imply Cersei more strongly. The TV show gives it to Joff.

my reading of it is that joffrey understands, and that he doesn't actually have much of a problem with it - after all, all the targaryen kings were the offspring of brothers and sisters. but he also understands that it must always remain secret or his claim to the throne is gone.

I sometimes forget that Arya doesn't know about how The Hound helped her sister. I wonder if she would still hate him so much if she did.

Ah, holidays give withdrawal symptoms; but you do get to see back to back episodes on your return.

Episode 4 - Fantastic stuff, almost a series finale feel - hardly a bum note.
Episode 5 - Lots of Bums noted. And at last some people took some baths - Although before sex is usually preferred..
Nikoli whatis face who plays Jaime is so good; but so many are delivering great performances.

Some arcs are being fondly recreated, some are being changed /improved, and some (the Sam Tarly one in particular) are not going in the right direction.

Plus still no jesters - hooray, send the scourge into the sea.

I think "At home with the Baratheons of Dragonstone", will actually be a freakier show than "Meet The Lannisters of King's Landing."

                                            I know I know.

I thought that was easily the weakest episode of the season, unfortunately. The Littlefinger/Varys and Loras/Sansa scenes were painfully hammy and laboured respectively. And for once I thought the deviations from the book (which were many, as best I can tell) were for the worse. That said, both Tywin and the Queen of Thorns remain a joy to watch, or rather listen to.

even though i've liked him in some other shows, i feel aiden gillen is a weak link in this cast. i've never found him particularly convincing as baelish, even though his portrayal of baelish is the first i ever knew of the character. he's a bit... dweeby. there's no real sense of menace there, and the voice he's devised for the character seems very affected. (this is twice in consecutive threads i find myself complaining about an irish actor's voice, which i'm afraid makes me a hater and a crank).

i think the guy who does varys is good, but they've been playing him pretty much as a drag queen from the outset, he's been a giant ham from the outset. i agree the scene between the two of them didn't ring true. baelish and varys are the two most politically cunning and cynical characters in the story, they're not going to trade machiavellianism 101-type exposition, and varys certainly wouldn't stand there saucer-eyed and scandalised listening to baelish prattling on about chaos being a ladder.

in mitigation, i guess you have to find short cuts to tell the story in this compressed format. maybe i would be more critical if my memory of the books was clearer - i only read them two years ago after seeing season 1 - but i didn't think the episode as a whole was weak. i loved it, the truth is i can't get enough of this shit no matter how ridiculous it is.

agree that tywin and olenna are great. i don't remember them negotiating directly with each other in the book - of course it didn't happen as neither is a point of view character.

Well that's the thing. Overall I think this season of the show has been doing a magnificent job of compressing some fairly tedious passages in the books to get to the event-that-shall-not-be-spoiled quicker, and with fewer hard-to-remember characters. And it had seemed much more sure-footed in veering away from the books than in previous seasons. But this particular episode fell flat on so many points. Hopefully that's got it out of their system.

It's frightening how, in scenes with just the right lighting, Arya looks like a miniature version of Chumley off Pawn Stars.
