Best supporting actor (in a motion picture)

People who have stolen the film with a bit part... As an example (but I disagree with), Robin Williams in 'Good Will Hunting'.

A better example would be Phillip Seymour Hoffman in (practically anything) 'The Talented Mr Ripley'.

Or Gary Oldman in 'The Fifth Element'.

(All scenery-chewing, bug-eyed, over the top performances, also welcome, but NOT Alan Rickman, as that would be a thread killer)

Alan Rickman in - nah, just kidding.

Having seen Spartacus for the zillionth time a couple of weeks ago, I'd nominate scene-stealers deluxe, Peter Ustinov and Charles Laughton. While all around them screams 'epic!', they give witty and bristlingly sharp performances.

      Gary Oldman in Leon, too.
      John Turturro in Lebowski.

What's our dividing line for bit, by the way?

For instance, I think Claude Rains completely owns Casablanca, but I'd hardly call it a bit part. Peter Lorre's role (which he is fantastic in), would be a bit part, right?

John Getz as loonbucket science magazine editor, Stathis Borens, in The Fly. It's a bellowy, over-the-top portrait of whacked-out lunacy and yet Getz makes it work with his controlled, slightly-cartoonish fury. It's also a nifty twist on the 'love triangle' aspect of the movie. In the examples I've come across, the protagonists keep their emotions with an almost quietened sense of reserve, but not in The Fly, where the candidate who finds himself frozen out of the female journalist's affections responds by being a loud and very pissed-off nutbucket.

A bonus in a film that still rewards with every showing.

Peter Lorre steals every film he's in, though.

A couple who were nominated for Oscars but sadly didn't win.
                  Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast.
                  Laurence Olivier in Marathon Man.

No, its spelled as you typed it, (although its 'Lektor' or something) and yes, fucking hell, he was utterly lightfingered in that, where William Petersen was good, but a tad overwrought.

I would suggest that the guidelines for this would be that they arent in more than half of the scenes (like Anthony Hopkins in 'Silence...', but he doesnt count, as that was just blatant.)

Christopher Walken in 'Pulp Fiction' type thing.

although from Pulp Fiction, the one who made it a shit film (it isnt) was the French girl married to Bruce Willis (who himself, almost nicked it)

                          Alec Baldwin in 'Glengarry Glenross'.
Kenneth Mars in 'The Producers' (the original).

I know I've mentioned it before, but when Thelma and Louise was out, just about every woman I know who saw it would ask afterward, "WHO was that guy?"

                              Maria Medeiros, IIRC.

Erwin Leder as Johann 'The Ghost' in 'Das Boot'.

The scene where he temporarily lost his mind when they dived to below the sub's depth limit was remarkable.

Tom Bell (I like him and his roles in general) as 'Seedy Eric' in 'Wish You Were Here'. I think I've mentioned this before, but his portrayal of the pervert was so convincing that when he showed up in the public library I used to work at (he was a local) I instinctively wanted to punch him! I soon regained my grasp on fiction/reality though. He actually seemed thoroughly nice.

I like Tom McGowan's supporting turn as 'Joe' in that film, too.

McGowan is probably one of my favourite 'regular guy' actors.
