    Oscars 2010

The Times today predicted that Avatar will win Best Picture, because despite the film's obvious lack of any meaningful plot, the Academy "can't fail to be swayed by huge box-office takings", but will then give Best Director to Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker , "just to ensure Cameron's bubble is burst just a bit by his ex-wife". Also they predicted that Jeff Bridges would win best actor for Crazy Heart , "because many are still guilty that they didn't vote for Mickey Rourke last year, so they will vote for Jeff this time (in virtually the same role)".

Is "the Academy" really that petty and, so ultimately, pointless? And if so, why does anyone really give a shit who wins an Oscar for anything?

Of course, the best way to guarantee an Oscar for your movie is to have Daniel Day Lewis in it. You could quite probably film him on the sofa, unshaven in his vest and boxers, scratching his privates in between eating handfuls of Wotsits from a family sized bag while flicking through the satellite channels on his telly. The best male lead is pretty much a shoe-in.

I'd like to see The Road come away with something, perhaps for cinematography. They do a very nice job of bringing the lifeless world of the book to the big screen.
