Six minutes of genius - amongst a sea of examples.

    'Yoiks - and awaay!'

Giggling like a loon, I was.

Is this one a recent discovery by Messrs Guy & ian? It's an all-time classic. I potty trained to that clip.

But Mel Blanc is just the voice characterisation, isn't he? Brilliant though it is, there's so much more going on there. The running gag of the spring-up beak is a stroke of genius.

Well, not by me - kudo to Guy for digging it out - but there are full-length feature 'comedies' made these days that would kill to have the measure of laughs and invention that animators like Chuck Jones and Tex Avery ploughed into those priceless few minutes. I grew up with this stuff, too, and I wasn't surprised in the least by how good and funny the above example of cartoon gold was.

I was going to say 'they don't make 'em like that anymore', but then Animaniacs at least gave it a try, even if it paled into insignificance next to the real thing.

                      RIP TC.

Even if I watched Top Cat today ('Boss Cat' sounds so bloody cumbersome) and was underwhelmed by it, it wouldn't matter, as its worth in childhood remembrance brings its own pleasurable currency. I could never decipher some of the end title song lyrics though.

                          Top Cat was brilliant.

A lot of those early Hanna-Barbera toons were, to be fair.

Btw, did you know that Mel Blanc was cast in Star Wars to be the voice of C-3PO? When he saw the rough footage of Anthony Daniels in the suit speaking the dialogue he convinced George Lucas that Anthony Daniels nailed the character and that they should make him do the voice instead.

Never mind, Blanc went on to outdo threepio when he did the voice of Twiki in Buck Rogers in the 25th Century a few years later.

                            "Bi-di bi-di bi-di whats up, Buck?"
