Received wisdom on 'bad' films
Worst than all of these films though, is the self-indugent scientologist shit that was Battlefield Earth.
I still watch bits of it if it's on, purely to astound myself with the fact that, at some point along the line, someone will lower themselves to make complete buckets of shite such as John Travolta's pet project. I watch frames of it thinking...well...what were they thinking? It's a completely dreadful experience made worse by the slight Hollywood sheen given it by hands that should have been working on better movies.
Speaking of other bad Travolta movies, I remember giggling continually at the 'climactic' dance-off in a dry-ice, staged recreation of Hell in Staying Alive, directed by Sylvester Stallone.
When it comes down to it, the cable channel showing Sky Movies is a great source of worthless films that have you wondering why they were made at all. Almost every week, examples of anonymous, badly-made crap spring up which poses questions as to whoever bothered about green-lighting such gubbins in the first place. We talk about gigantic money-burning epics from De Palma, Costner and Cimino, but forget about an abundance of vapid, valueless arse which seems to spring up on a monthly basis for our viewing pleasure.
As the phrase goes: there's a lot of it about.
