The Execution of Gary Glitter (spoiler alert)

I'm watching it again now, just to see if it's as horrible as it was the first time.

Yeah, pretty much Sun Porn. Too much Gary Bushell and Anne Widdecome. And the remix tune at the end was dreadful. The BBC do this sort of thing much better, even though they wouldn't have touched it with a bargepole.

This wasn't as terrible as I thought it was going to be (once you get past the tawdry sensationalism of it existing in the first place).

The one thing I didn't like about it is the portrayal of Glitter's personality. He was shown as being all cocky smirks, boots-on-the-table and Johnny Rottenesque sarcasm. How do they know he's like that? He isn't like that, is he? I suppose he might be, but have they met him or studied interview footage, or was that a complete piece of fabr... I mean, artistic licence?

I've never met Gary Glitter, and the only time I remember seeing him interviewed was on This Is Your Life (admittedly in very different and happier times), and he was nothing like that at all.

Jonathan King is certainly the picture of the unrepentant serial offender, but Gary Glitter? I'm not so sure. Maybe there's some sort of JK/GG personality-meld going on in the minds of the writers.

I suppose they wanted to make him unsympathetic in every possible way, just to make it clear who's the baddie, but it bugged me anyway.

I think the point was he wouldn't have been executed if he'd been sympathetic. It's a bit like The Outsider, where the defendant gets hung for acting the wrong way as much as for his crime.

But it was rubbish indeed. Gary Bushell and the other people were so bad, they made it look less real.

          Gary Bushell is real?

            Real, if not for real.

I think as an imagining of Gary Glitter, the portrayal was very good, SR. But you're right, of course - it could only be an imagining. But the real sow's ear was the very concept. I think this has already taken its place in the annals of Channel 4 embarrassment.
