    Lars von Trier

    Is he really any good?

I mean, I've liked some of his stuff, like 'Kingdom', but on the other hand I've heard many people say that he's just pretentious rubbish and, given that he was behind the 'Dogme' scene, I'm also inclined to have some sympathy for that viewpoint too.

So... any suggestions for starting points after 'Kingdom'? ...If any?

I personally think Breaking the Waves is fantastic. It's hard going at times, but ultimately very uplifting. I can see how some might think the final scene silly, but it gets me welling up every time.

Oh man. I LOVE von Trier. He's a bloody genius. I think Breaking the Waves and Dogville are masterpieces. He's like an opposite of what I was saying about Haneke. Haneke is all rigidity and formality and von Trier is all humanity.

What did you make of Antichrist, Lyra?

(The thread on that one had plenty of musing about Von Trier and Haneke, by the way Clive.)
