    OTF Film Club

An idea came into my head over the weekend. The Film & TV section has been a lot busier since the switch to WSC. Inevitabily though, the discussion tends to focus on new releases.

What I was thinking was if we nominated a film of the fortnight or month and any OTFer who was interested could watch it and give their views. Ideally, the film would be widely available on DVD or TV schedules. I know personally that I get a lot out of reading what others think of a film and usually get something out of the discussion that I missed at the time of viewing.

So, would anyone be interested and if so, what film would you nominate?

Definitely, I've done this elsewhere and it works. What about once a month though? Once a fortnight might be a bit much?

I'm on board with this idea as well, though agree with Lyra that monthly is more realistic. If I were to nominate a film I'd recently seen that was available on DVD, I'd probably go with "No Country For Old Men" or "There Will Be Blood", both of which I found interesting and provide decent room for discussion.

Of course, if anyone has seen Southland Tales and wants to explain it to me, that would be excellent, too.

I've no problem with monthly. Fortnightly was a bit ambitious.

Those two are a bit new, Gyuri, I don't think they're out on DVD yet in the UK.

I guess films likely to cause some divisions of opinion would be good, as well as recognised 'classics'?

How to choose them? Maybe NAFA should choose one for May and then nominate the next person to choose one for June, who will then nominate someone for July etc. Or maybe people should make suggestions and then someone pick one out of a hat.

That's a fair point, Lyra. I like the idea of NAFA choosing the first one.

People really can't watch one DVD every two weeks?

I go to the pub once a month for the local film club (and not in any way for the beer).

I just saw Last Year at Marienbad, fantastic movie. This would probably make a good discussion here...

Hopefully it doesn't turn into that erwin. I'd be happy to choose a film but having never been in a film club or seen it on an online forum I frequent I wouldn't mind some pointers.

I have Last Year at Marienbad at home but haven't watched it yet. I don't think I've got to the stage were I'd pick up on it's subtleness yet.

well here is some of what the film club I've been involved in has watched over the years:

                          Quiz Show
                          Billy Liar
                          Don't Look Now
                          Lawrence of Arabia
                          Manhunter
                          The Ice Storm
                          L'Appartement
                          Freddy got Fingered
                          Straw Dogs
                          The Princess Bride
                          Red Squirrel
                          Devil in a Blue Dress
                          The Cook the Thief
                          Lovers of the Arctic Circle
                          Gods and Monsters
                          Jackie Brown
                          The Virgin Suicides
                          Pi
                          Live Flesh
                          Blood Simple
                          Josie and the Pussycats
                          The Manchurian Candidate
                          Dead Man
                          Towering Inferno
                          City of Lost Children
                          Dr Zhivago
                          The Straight Story
                          Last Temptation of Christ
                          Jaws
                          Small Faces
                          Miller's Crossing

I've not seen 9 of these, actually, good grief. And what a dearth of non-English language films.

I think I would suggest maybe picking a director that you like, or would like to know better, and then choosing one of their films?

How about Dogville to start off? It's on Film4 for those who have it on Monday, 10th at 11pm and also widely available on DVD.

That is a thoroughly *excellent* choice.
There's a lot to discuss. I think it's an absolute masterpiece but I've argued before with people who despise it, so, yeah.

Will it be a separate thread for each film? I guess that works best.

Excellent question, erwin. I think I'll start a thread and we'll see who watches and comments. If it's a success I'll nominate someone to come up with a film for June. If the thread is greeted with tumbleweed, we'll never speak of it again.
