    7. All happy families resemble one another, each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.

And (assuming that books start as they mean to go on) 6 is The Periodic Table by Primo Levi.

1 is The Master and Margarita by Bulgarkov.

10 is indeed Gradgrind in Hard Times.

I first thought that 5 was Grapes of Wrath, but for some reason recall it beginning differently. Nefertiti may well be right.

            I will guess on:

            4. Midnight's Children, Salman Rushdie.

I think 8 is Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, but I wouldn't bet loads of money on it.

Grrr, damn you, Andy C (did you get my text by the way?)

If everyone's wrong about 5 could it perhaps be The Wizard of Oz?

Purves: my phone might have got your text, but since I've lost the instrument and had to replace it, I didn't. I'll PM you my new number.

I have currently only 4 books in my possession, the rest being either at the charity shop, or at my mothers. One of them is Disgrace, as mentioned above. These are the opening lines of the other 3.

                        1. Vaughan died yesterday in his last car-crash. Crash, J G Ballard - Carlo Ginzburg

                        2. When he woke in the woods in the dark and the cold of the night he'd reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him. The Road, Cormac McCarthy- King Mob

3.xxxx dealt prescription drugs in Ashford; the Gateway to Europe. Darkmans, Nicola Barker - Lyra

I think no. 3 in particular, will be quite easy.
