And 4 is "he was a very parfait gentil knight"

I hadn't realised thetr were two points at stake for poet and completing the line.

see Mum and Dad. I told you that English literature degree would pay off eventually...

and thanks for a great quiz Andy.

It's instructive to visit the undergrowth in which the sound bite lurks.

          Scores update:

          Code:
          nefertiti 6
          Ibn Pickthall 4
          Purves Grundy 2
          ToastBasedKillah 2
          Ginger Yellow 1
Thanks, nefertiti. That's precisely what I was hoping for - the quotations so often exist in isolation, and it's good (and sometimes startling) to realise that they all began not as stand-alone bons mots but as part of some broader thought process.

May I claim the bonus point for No. 1?

The line "This is the way the world ends" is repeated three times.

            Is 7 Houseman?

              Literary detective arrives at thread,

"If it's Houseman, and it sounds like him then we're looking for a famous beery one- (in fact two-)liner from Houseman.

              "How about

"Malt does more than Milton can,
to justify God's way to man."?

"Lab tests show the scansion and rhyme scheme all check.

Excellent, Lewis. I think you've cracked it."

                Nailed it between you.

And yes, I was looking for the triple repetition in the Eliot.

                  So we're left with

                  9

The hues of youth upon a brow of woe,
Which Man deemed old two thousand years ago.
Match me such marvel save in Eastern clime,...

                  and the quotation that follows

                  10

My heart leaps up when I behold
                  A rainbow in the sky:
                  So was it when my life began;
                  So is it now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
                  Or let me die!...

                      number 9 must be

a rose-red City half as old as time

I have no idea who wrote it.

Probably the same guy who wrote "play up play up and play the game."

Or maybe he was a poetic one-hit wonder.

Yes, but what's the next line? It's very familiar indeed.

The line is correct. The author is, as you suspect, not known for much else.

Play up! Play up! And play the game! is from Sir Henry Newbolt's Vitaļ Lampada, which was under consideration for inclusion in this little quiz.

The league championship's long been settled, but the European slots are still up for grabs.

If there's no further contribution I'll reveal the two missing answers towards the end of this working day - say, in about six hours.

                            OK, to wrap this up:

A rose-red city, half as old as time comes from Petra by John William Burgon, and the Wordsworth line is The Child is father of the Man.

So that's two points to me.

Thank you all who took part.
