    Brian Aldiss, 1925-2017

Brian Aldiss has died at the age of 92.

Surprised the literati on here haven't mentioned it previously.

    A great talent.

    Will be missed.

Never read anything by him. Any recommendations?

I never really got on with his stuff. Not as accessible as Asimov or grounded as Clarke.

Come on, Guy - we're getting extremely impatient for an answer here. And the last people you want to piss off are the literati.

Have a go at Supertoys Last All Summer Long and go from there. If you get it, you'll get it.

I remember reading some stuff in my teens and early twenties and being mostly underwhelmed. Or I didn't get it. Barefoot in the Head was completely bonkers, but it felt like it was trying too hard. Of the New Worlds authors, Ballard was very much more my thing.

And the other problem with Aldiss is that he was always around Oxford presenting SF stuff and he was immensely pretentious and self-important, so I wanted to dislike him.
