This sad news doesn't deserve to be a nil thread...

I was obsessed with all the working class novelists of his generation when I was a teenager. I must've read all his novels then in print (up to early 80s) but didn't realise he was also prolific (with Lindsay Anderson directing/producing) writing for the stage.

A letter in today's Grauniad in response to the obit was amusing: that as a Wakefield grammar boy he was sternly written to when he took up Rugby League (and getting paid for it), accused of letting the school and its name down. Also amusing to think he was studying art at the Slade and playing for Wakefield Trinity at the same time.
