Sadly, the spirit of Allen Lane seems decidely absent from the 2016 incarnation of Penguin, which has withdrawn recognition from both Unite and the NUJ in London. Of course, one could argue that the founding model of publishing quality paperbacks at bargain prices was hardly union-friendly, but over the decades the imprint did provide mass exposure for left-wing political thought, and given the array of current publishing houses, both authors and readers can vote with their wallets.
