    Becoming Johnny Vegas

A unique book in many ways - confessional, self-deprecating and even self-lacerating at times. However, I think it's let down by being far too long (I skimmed a large number of repetitive pages) and by stopping at 1997, just when the story was entering its most drunken and debauched phase. Vegas claims he stops there because the Vegas persona took him over at this point so he would no longer be writing about his true self, but it still seems a cop-out to not directly confront the things he did under that persona.

It's also rather flip to blame everything on the persona, as if the "real me" should be absolved of blame because the persona does all the bad deeds. It's like a lame defence plea of temporary insanity, except the insanity lasts 15-20 years.
