      Lovely quote there.

On a more prosaic level, I think of that episode of M*A*S*H when they have a novel delivered to the camp and feel the delight, each desperate for the next chapter. As with many people in real wars, a book is the escape (and paperbacks were still new then).

I've never been near a war but a travellers' book swap has often saved my sanity when I was isolated or sick, especially in the pre-smartphone days.

My mam often passed down the anecdote given to her by one of my infant school teachers. Which was along lines of she heavily encouraged her charges to read at every opportunity & it provided the most gratification of her profession when carried out. But in my case she had to make an exception. I would sitting with a book in my lap instead of engaging with all other class room activities.
