When it comes to well-written history Barbara Tuchman is top of my list. I thought I'd read most, if not all, of her books years ago. But scanning the shelves last night I came across an uncracked copy of Bible and Sword: England and Palestine from the Bronze Age to Balfour. Quite why I never read it I've no idea but it was a wonderful surprise, quite made my evening. Has anyone else had a similar happy event recently?

I've been accumulating Ross Macdonald books since my teens and, much as I love him, there are a couple that I genuinely can't remember whether I've read or not. His consistency in subject matter and themes are not entirely helpful on this front. A wealthy but unhappy family with a secret, you say? Well, it does sound familiar...
