    Authors getting screwed

Disney reckon they bought the rights to sell old Star Wars and Alien novels but without the liability to pay royalties to the author, Alan Dean Foster.

The fact that he thinks " Unca Walt " wouldn't have approved of this is touching really.

How the hell do Disney reckon that is going to work?

They don't. They're just stonewalling in the hope he'll go away. Bastards.

He's got cancer. They hope he'll die before they have to pay him.

I imagine his heirs can pursue it.

Wasn't Winston Groom, the author of Forrest Gump, screwed over because he was entitled to a percentage of the net profits of the film and Hollywood accounting rendered it a loss-maker?

Without knowing the facts, probably. 'Net' profits in Hollywood are almost non-existent. First-dollar gross profits are what you want written into your deal.

It seems they then settled with him by giving him at least $1m for the screenplay to the sequel, and promptly not bothering further with it:

Famously, the stars of Spinal Tap were fighting for royalties for decades. Maybe they still are.

Interesting discussion of this case in the comments of this piece:

                      https://www.sfwa.org/2020/11/18/disney-must-pay/

But it seems like Disney’s lawyers haven’t actually made a case. They’re just stalling. I don’t see why ADF and/or SFWA can’t just take this to court to force them to respond.
