I finished Branch a while ago. He tries to do too much and I did skim some chapters but the key events are analyzed in gripping detail and he gives space to amazing people like Diane Nash whose contributions are normally overshadowed in discussions of MLK. Each volume is also a work in its own right so they don't have to be read as a block if you want to take a break of weeks or months between them.

I would like to give credit to Ursus for mentioning Branch on the forum in a way that prompted me to take the plunge.

I agree that the 20s, 30s and 40s are important, such as the activists inspired by Garvey and the early Islamic movements.

Massive Resistance is of course relevant to now because we are seeing similar moves on voter suppression.

If you subscribe to HBO Max, they have the 6-part documentary series Eyes on the Prize now. I just watched it again for maybe the fourth time, and it's always worth a revisit to see the faces and hear the voices of the movement..
