Recommendations for Books and Articles about the Roma

I've only ever read Bury Me Standing by Isabel Fonseca and would be grateful for any other recommendations.

We've got quite a few Roma students in our school and after reading a report by the British Council on Roma in education I realised that I knew very little bar the obvious; the most persecuted minority in Europe, more Roma as a proportion died under the Nazis than any other group, they originate from either the Punjab or Rajistan, the term Gypsy is deeply offensive to them, and they are deeply mistrustful of outsiders.

If I can get enough resources and access to the community I'm thinking about doing my MA dissertation in this area.

I've only ever read the Fonseca book (which features one chapter in my home town) . (I remember former OTFer and professional historian Spangly Princess telling me that there is a fair amount of controversy about that book btw, and it's not regarded that well by many professional academics)

I can tell lots of anecdotal stuff, but don;t have much else in the way of actual research. Bored will probably have a lot as I know he has written a thesis of his own on this subject.

Happy to hear any of the anecdotal stuff if you want to share. I'd no idea that Bored had done his thesis in this field of study so I'm looking forward to hearing from him.

I wonder what the issues were with Fonseca's book.

I think it was her research methodology. Or lack thereof.

          Good articles here

          https://www.hmd.org.uk/news/roma-com...c-recognition/

Worth noting that Auschwitz had a subcamp specifically to organize the murder of this group.

Sorry, AE, I did do my dissertation on comparing and contrasting how the Roma are educated here and in Eastern Europe. I also wrote a screenplay based on Eastern European Roma asylum seekers in Wales so did research for that. I am going out now but will find some time to post the relevant literature. I could also pm the dissertation to you if you were interested.
