    The new Fall Album

    is pretty good.

The stand out is a 12 minute long song with a banjo interlude called 'Fifty Year Old Man'.

I've spelled my own name wrong. That's got to be a first.

Just 'pretty good'? The usual/better than usual/worse than usual?

    What's the release date?

And what's it called? I think this might be the first I've heard of it.

I know it's called Imperial Wax Solvent. It's been much-anticipated on the fan site.

Okay. Well, it's a lot better than Reformation - which eagle-eyed posters will remember I liked.

It's on par with the Real New Fall Album or Country on the Click for solid quality. The standout tracks are the slightly Beefheartian/Nuggets Wolf Kidult Man, the epic 10 minutes plus 50-Year-Old Man, the recent live favourite Senior Twilight Stock Replacer (which sounds a little bit like 'Guest Informant' although with the chant "Senior Twilight Stock Replacer!" instead of "Bagdhad Spacecog Analyst!") There is also the great slightly Sparta FC-esque 'I've Been Duped' which features Elenor his wife singing the great line: "Hairy men. Digging up Scotland."

Just listening to it again. It's mint.

I wanted to ask you and SR this the other day and forgot: how many times to reviewers typically listen to a new album before writing about it? Do you have strict 'rules' about not writing a word until you've given it two listens minimum, and stuff like that?

Personally, I can do it in one listen, and I often don't have a choice (given the deadlines I work to).

If something's blatantly absolute shit, you don't need a second listen to verify it. If something's absolutely brilliant, you learn to sum up its brilliance in the knowledge that, given another seven days, you could probably do a much better job. And you learn to tell which ones are likely to be 'growers'.

Of course, there are some albums that I receive months in advance, and by the time it comes to review them, I know them almost too well, and there's too much to say...

WOM: It really depends on how far in advance people send me stuff to be honest. The time you get given is getting eroded away year by year because of fears about albums leaking onto PTP file sharing sites.

If it's really shit, I can only bear to listen to it a few times but if I'm really going to go to town on something I usually sleep on it and double check that it's still that bad the next day.

Something I'm going to praise, ideally I'll listen to loads of times just because I really enjoy it.

I've had to not review albums by loads of bands recently because they've turned up on the day of release. Fucking drives me mad.

Cuts both ways, though, doesn't it. The very real existence of P2P leaks (for which journalists are the unjustified scapegoats, of course) means that if a record company does try the Snakes On A Plane tactic, 9 times out of 10 I can just nick the album off the internet anyway.

Cheers, both. I think I'd be shit at doing what you do. I make snap decisions about music and then backtrack later, so I'd always be printing retractions. The other day I heard a track on the CBC by a Dublin fellow named Damien Dempsey. The first minute or so was like a drill through my skull and I wrote it off as garbage. By the end of the song, I wanted to buy it. I don't think I'd have the objectivity needed.

Yeah, you're right but I just get angry with lazy fucking PRs. Just stop fucking wanking and doing coke and post me the fucking record. You've sent copies of it to all of your mates already - why not send one to a reviewer?

I remember once having to plead with online and print PRs for Battles and the support bands to get me into a Scala show because I was reviewing for a magazine and I'd recently written two features on them. Got the sorry list's too tight response and eventual had to blag in on the band's list - something I don't like doing.

As soon as I got in there I was confronted by this fucking thundercunt who used to do PR for a little indie label was stood there with his arms round three girls who'd just stepped out of Sugar Ape magazine. "Look John! We're eating M&Ms but throwing the green ones over our shoulders!" I asked him if he was there to watch the band or just hang out. He said hang out. Three standers by had to pull me off him.

He ticks a lot of the sincere singer/songwriter boxes, but most of what I have heard all sound the same: tuneless drivel. Just not my cup of tea.

There's a track on it called 'Strange Town' if that's what you mean. It's a Groundhogs track and it's the weakest song on the album. They've really lost their knack for doing cover versions.

Christ, this place never ceases to amaze me.

Where's Linus to call them hair metal?

It's not a phrase I normally use, but he does push the whole working class northside roots, speaking the truth. Actually that sounds like one of his lyrics.

Heck, according to his Wiki he is "making social comment on the positive and negative aspects arising from Ireland's Celtic Tiger society."

It was The City, off To Hell or Barbados, from last year. They've (he've?)apparently been around a while but it's the first I've heard.

                                          It's not on this album.

Noby: The Arctic Monkeys, The Wedding Present, Blaggers ITA - these are all bands who push their working class regional backgrounds. The Fall, as any fule kno, are named after an Albert Camus novel, are pretty much universally detested in their local Salford and Greater Manchester etc, etc.

If you think being a 50-year-old punk poet who is influenced by situationism, Philip K Dick, garage punk and Krautrock is playing the northern card you're on drugs.

Sorry GFDC, but I was replying to WOM about Dempsey. He just overplays the northside Dublin card for me.

[Edit: I hope you didn't think I was referring to the Fall all along]
