Does anyone remember the interview (possibly with Melody Maker) in which Neil Young said he wouldn't want a gay person handling his groceries at the supermarket checkout because of AIDS? (If anyone has the direct quote, even better.)

"Hypothetical gay"- was that how Michael Stipe described himself, at one point?

quote:
With half the material for a follow-up album to Old Ways already in the can, Young is in the middle of a renaissance of sorts. Not even the AIDS terror can dent his confidence.

"It is scary. You go to the supermarket and you see a faggot behind the fuckin' cash register. You don't want him to handle your potatoes. It's true! It's paranoid but that's the way it is even though it's not just gay people, they're taking the rap. There's a lotta religious people, of course, who feel that this is God's work. God's saying, y'know, "no more buttfucking or we're gonna getcha'."

Young cackled dementedly. "I don't know what it is. It's natural, that's one thing about it. It's a living organism or virus, whatever it is. I hope they find something to stop it. It's worse than the Killer Bees."

Young obviously isn't making a play for the Gay vote. They probably don't hold with that sort of thing in the country.

Odd, they're usually in the meat section. Maybe someone had returned it.

It's a weird quote. He sort of rambles between offensiveness and criticism of the prejudiced.

One of my high school's few claims to fame is that Neil Young dropped out of it.

You can see his thought processes quite clearly - he starts off like he's having a LOL with his country mates, then catches himself.

Horrible time for Neil Young. His music was wretched around then as well.

Yeah, it does smack a bit of 'hoo-ha, did I just say that?' Definitely one or two backwater attitudes percolating away there...

Has this been dug up to take the heat off Nicky W?

Nah, it's been dug up because I'm writing a Neil Young review and I like to ramble on about the past. Nice coincidence, I admit.
